Black & White
Black and white photography is less about the specific subject, more about how that subject interacts with the light overall tonality of the shot. Black and white represents the simplicity of the moment, it removes distractions and reconnects us us to the roots of photographic art. When unable to use color to lead the eye into or around the shot it forces the artist to look more widely, at shapes and textures. Interestingly, shadows and highlights become a feature of these photographs, which are typically elements that photographers tends to be troubled by. To me, black and white is comparable to a sculptor needing to also learn how to paint - it's a very different medium, one that is quite challenging.
