Half Dome Under a Passing Storm

I waited many years to have conditions this perfect to make this image of the incredible monolith that is Half Dome. Incredible lighting, passing storm, texture for days and when zoomed in 100% you can actually clearly see people standing out on the diving board, that beak like protrusion that the top. Just a spectacular day at Glacier Point, viewing the world famous granite feature.

Simplicity

Oxbow Bend in Grand Teton National Park, WY. While shooting on this early morning I stopped a few times to just appreciate the diversity of tonality, color, tranquility and life. You can see the ice frosted lavender in the foreground as the sunrise descends on the distant landscape with a warming light. Taken in late autumn this photo is actually quite colorful but that color range made for an even better black and white. Sometimes, simplicity tells the best story of all.

Maverick's Left B&W

From this perspective, taken from over a mile away, the wave looks quite innocent, yet hollow. In fact, this wave is over 30 feet tall as measured from the trough to the peak. It's a beast of a wave, the best of the best in the world are continually humbled by the challenge of riding it.

Laguna Oak Reflections

Explosion

This was shot in color but the result was distracting from the essence what I think this photograph emphasizes, which is the mega diversity of tonality. The deep water, open ocean wave is barely rideable when it gets this big. There is no one surfing it for good reason - sketchy as hell - but pretty and captures the power of the ocean well.

Salt Point, CA - a wonder of sea life, geology and erosion cycles. Here is a rock canyon, exposed during the low tide, carve carved out by millions of years of tidal action.

Index Bridge - Index, WA

Index, Washington, February 2014. Black and white photography is a great lesson in composition and tonality and forces me to look more intently at the scenes I am attempting to capture. I feel like it hides nothing. This was the first dusting of an otherwise drought ridden winter. The elevation in Index, WA is only 577' and the snow comes in fat and fast here. This iconic bridge is found in a remote part of eastern Washington known by climbers for its difficult granite rock walls.

Last Stand - B & W

A black and white rendition of the embattled and whimsical eucalyptus tree in coastal Sonoma County marks the end of an era. Where all of its peers have been replaced by wide open bovine grazing land, this proud tree lives on, no doubt eager to see another quiet sunset.

Central Park West

At 10PM, December 28, 2015 two of my oldest friends and I took a walk through Central Park soon after a cold winter downpour. The temperature was in the 40's, had it been in the 30's it would have dumped a bunch of fresh snow. The wet weather cleared the park and we basically had it all to ourselves, a rare occurrence in such a densely populated area. In this photo is a path and street lamps, eerily free of people in upper Central Park West, near Harlem. The glowing sky is a reflection of NYC lights on thick cloud cover.

Passing Storm at Half Dome

Yosemite sees all four seasons rather distinctly. In winter the snows fall at higher altitudes, sometimes down in the valley but the cold, dampness of those passings storms tell breathtaking tales.
