Coastal Pond Sunset
A few times a year, after a big rain this pond fills and soon after drains in the sand dunes. It lasts only a day or so. I've been trying to time that event with a colorful sunset for quite a while before this happened.
Calm Before the Storm
I've lived near Bodega Bay, CA 20 years. Although I'm sure it has happened before, I've never experienced a night this calm. There was not a wisp of breeze in the bay this night. I took this photo just before midnight - using a two second exposure! Which any photographer wold tell you is not a good idea since the rocking of the floating boats will almost always yield blurry images. I did it to prove the point, an evening so still you can still read the names of the boats across their stern's. Amazingly rare and serene conditions at a location normally known by locals as "Blowdega Bay". (2:1 Panoramic Crop)

Fog Lined Valley's of Goat Rock State Beach;
Jenner, CA. I went out one morning after a passing storm blew through hoping to catch good lighting at a nearby surf spot. No such luck, but in the other direction, shooting into the rising sun, this happened. (If you look closely, you'll see raindrops still falling).
On this night my wife was in need of a little break from our 3 & 7 year old's bedtime meltdown routine, so I took them to town for a 9PM photo shoot. A few days earlier a replica was constructed of a swingset from "The Birds" movie and they played on it (in the dark) while I climbed the hill behind them and took this photo. This shot is cool because it includes all of the buildings in downtown Bodega on the south side of Bodega Hwy.
Any photographer living in Sonoma County will tell you that the opportunity to shoot spectacular photos comes along quite a bit around here. The vineyards, rivers, pastures and especially coastal grasslands are awe inspiring when lit with sunset light. The challenge is that the elements often make it tough to get the shot. Biting cold and stiff winds are common at this location but on this day in Bodega Bay - stillness.

(2:1 Panoramic) - Earth holidays and celestially significant events are among my favorite occasions to head out and find photos to take. Some artists ‘see’ their work before they make it, for me it’s kind of the opposite. I often don’t know exactly what I am looking for but I trust that when I show up, the subject will emerge. This is a personal philosophy of sorts as well, and reminds me the importance of getting out of the house and into the field, where the real work and inspiration takes place. I shot this photograph on December 21, 2014, the Winter Solstice which this time around was coupled with a ‘king tide’ - a bigger than normal tidal range caused by the sun and the moon both pulling on the earth in unison. Today is a double feature nature day and despite the rain and rather blah sky – I think I happened upon a nice one. Enjoy, and Happy 1st day of winter!
